Press Conference - Petition to Parliament
11th February 2009
Anti-dental amalgam campaigner Juliet Pratt is submitting her
petition of 1300 signatures, to Green MP Sue Kedgley at a Press
Conference in Auckland .
Many supporters including, Dentists and Doctors will be attending,
and are calling on the Government to immediately prohibit the use
of mercury amalgam dental fillings for children and pregnant women
and phase it out entirely by the end of 2013.
Juliet suffered chronic fatigue syndrome for 9 years, which
she attributes to the amalgam fillings she had.
"Mercury amalgam is considered hazardous waste after it has
been removed. Who can conclusively say it is safe in between
when it is in our bodies?" Juliet says.
The US Food and Drug Administration states on its
website that when amalgam fillings are placed in teeth or removed
from teeth, they release mercury vapour. The vapour is also released
during chewing, brushing and having a hot drink. Amalgam fillings
are 50% mercury, the most toxic substance on our planet.
Last year the FDA did a swift reversal of
its 30-year history of protecting mercury amalgam fillings.
Their official website now states "Dental amalgams contain mercury,
which may have neurotoxin effects on the nervous systems of
developing children and foetuses."
The FDA have been given until July this year, to issue a final
ruling to classify dental amalgam.
