ANTI-DENTAL AMALGAM CAMPAIGNER AND PONSONBY
business woman, Juliet Pratt submitted her petition of 1300 signatures, to
Green MP Sue Kedgley at a Press Conference at Grey Lynn community centre
last month.

Supporters including Dentists, Doctors and prominent Ponsonby health
professionals attended. They are calling on the Government to immediately
prohibit the use of mercury amalgam dental fi llings for children and pregnant
women and phase it out entirely by the end of 2013.

Seven countries have already banned or advised against the use of amalgam
fi llings, particular in children and pregnant women. “The economic impact in
New Zealand from diseases related to mercury amalgam fi llings will be dramatic in years to come,” says Pratt, who herself suffered chronic fatigue syndrome for nine years, which she attributes to the amalgam fi llings in her mouth. “Mercury amalgam is considered hazardous waste before implacement and after it has been removed from the mouth. How then can we be certain that mercury does not present a risk when implanted in amalgam filings?

The US Food and Drug Administration states on its website that when amalgam
fi llings are placed in teeth or removed from teeth, they release mercury vapour.
The vapour is also released during chewing and brushing. Mercury vapour can
even be released when drinking a hot cup of tea. Amalgam fillings are 50%
mercury, one of the most toxic substances on the planet.

Last year the FDA did a swift reversal of its 30-year history of supporting the use
of mercury amalgam fi llings. Their official website now states, “Dental amalgams contain mercury, which may have neurotoxin effects on the nervous systems of developing children and foetuses.”

The FDA has been given until July this year, to issue a fi nal ruling to classify
dental amalgam. Juliet is keen to hear from anyone who believes they may have
suffered ill health after receiving mercury amalgam fi lings.
